Roots Camp

UL Lafayette’s Traditional Music Program & Louisiana Folk Roots Present Roots Camp! Dates: June 26-28

Roots Camp is a music camp for teenage musicians ages 14-17.  The 3-day camp is a hands-on study of Louisiana traditional music styles and their influences from broader American traditional music genres. Students will learn songs on the instrument(s) they already play and will have opportunities to play folk instruments that may be new to them.  Music media recording and composition techniques are an exciting feature of the camp. Another benefit is participants get an up-close look at the UL Lafayette School of Music.

This year’s camp will be lead by Jane Vidrine of the Grammy-nominated Magnolia Sisters. An accomplished instrumentalist, vocalist, and teacher, her extensive Cajun and Old-time repertoire was acquired by visiting with and learning from the old masters in both genres. Visiting artist/teachers in Cajun, Irish, Old time, Blues, and Zydeco genres will round out the staff. Professor Chris Munson, coordinator of UL’s music media program, will return to offer instruction on music technology and recording.

New campers will need to send us a quick video performing the song of your choice. If you attended Roots Camp 2016, no need to apply again, simply email us and let us know you would like to return this year.

The three-day intensive camp is $200; campers will purchase lunch daily in the UL Lafayette Student Union.

For more information on uploading your audition videos, please e-mail info@lafolkroots.org or call 337-234-8360. Registration closes June 7, 2018.
