Our Routes to Roots Workshop Series
Throughout the year we present great workshops covering a broad spectrum of topics. Our workshops may be performance or presentation-based, instruction-based, discussion-based, hands-on or some combination of all of the above. Here's what's coming up:
Song Circles with Marce Lacouture
Presented by Louisiana Folk Roots and Creativity @ the Center
All three Song Circle workshops take place at the Acadiana Center for the Arts in downtown Lafayette.
March 17, 2012, 10 am - 12 noon:
Song Circle: Community Singing for Everyone
Here’s a sing-along session just for the fun of singing with other voices. We'll draw songs from a deep bag of musical styles: folk, old-time, traditional ballads, chants, classic country, gospel, blues and pop, and we’ll even sing in several different languages.
March 24, 2012, 10 am - 12 noon:
Song Circle: Same Songs, Different Sounds
We'll learn and compare English and French versions of the same traditional ballads. The words and melodies of the ballads might be different, but the story is the same and the songs are beautiful in either language.
March 31, 2012, 10 am - 12 noon:
Song Circle: Favorite Jam Songs with special guest Joel Breaux
We’ll learn to sing some all-time favorite Cajun jam songs. Many jammers know how to play these songs, but may have never learned the words to them. Popular jam leader Joel Breaux, with his classic Cajun tenor voice, will teach you so you can sing along at your next jam session.
Lyrics for all sessions will be provided. Singing will be call and response, in unison and with harmonies. These workshops are for all levels of singing experience, including those of you who were told never to sing!
$15 per workshop/$10 for AcA and LFR members. For all three workshops, $40/$25 for AcA and LFR members. All three workshops will be held at the AcA.
To register please call the Acadiana Center for the Arts at (337)233-7060
The Song Circle workshops are supported in part by a Decentralized Arts Funding grant.
