back to Roots News

On Saturday, September 15, Louisiana Folk Roots will present three outstanding Routes to Roots workshops. The first workshop, from 10:00 a.m. to noon, will be Traditional Uses of Native Plants with local naturalist Bill Fontenot of The Nature Station. Bill has presented a wide variety of workshops for Louisiana Folk Roots featuring the native plants and wildlife of Acadiana, and his very popular presentations are always jam-packed with great information and tips. This workshop will take place at the Fontenot private nursery in Carencro. The cost is $8 ($5 for members of Friends of Louisiana Folk Roots.) Call LFR for directions.

The next two workshops will be Vocal Stylings with Marce and Jane. From 1:30-3:30 p.m., vocalist Marce Lacouture of the Nouveau String Band will present exercises to warm up the singing voice. Then she'll teach the music and lyrics of some wonderful traditional a capella home music in French and an old-time song in English. From 3:45-5:45, vocalist and guitarist Jane Vidrine of the popular Magnolia Sisters will take over and teach some great dance hall songs and harmonies. The workshops are designed to provide a real variety of vocal styles and to provide useful techniques for singers of all levels. The cost for each session is $8 ($5 for members of Friends of Louisiana Folk Roots), or $12 for both sessions ($8 for members). These two workshops will take place at Louisiana Folk Roots, 101 W. Vermilion in downtown Lafayette.
