GUIDELINES & FEES FOR FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN

Although the Dewey Balfa Cajun and Creole Heritage Week is primarily designed for adults, children have always been welcome. Because the DBCCHW takes place during the school year, we anticipate few, if any, children in attendance. However, some families have determined that they wish to share this intensive immersion experience with their children. We at Louisiana Folk Roots do realize, after all, that is our children who will carry on the precious traditions presented at the DBCCHW.

Over the years, the following guidelines have emerged and have become essential in order for all participants to enjoy the DBCCHW to its fullest:

RESPONSIBILITY
• Children under 18 years of age MUST be accompanied by an adult who is either a parent or a guardian. The accompanying adult(s) must be registered and must pay the full cost of attending the DBCCHW, and are welcome to attend classes and attend all events.
• Children are the responsibility of the parent or guardian AT ALL TIMES. Responsibility may be delegated to other adults who agree to help temporarily, but children and parents/guardians must know who the responsible adult is AT ALL TIMES.
• If your child is moving about and playing, please be considerate of classes, workshops, and performances that are going on. Also, it may not be appropriate for some very young children to attend some of the activities.
• Quiet is necessary and appreciated during announcements in the dining hall.
• We provide unlimited self-serve beverages in the dining hall throughout the week, where sugar and caffeine are readily available to people of all ages. Please be aware of your child’s intake of these substances.

CLASSES
• Because very few children attend the DBCCHW, it would be unproductive for us to create a full-time children’s program. However, classes at the DBCCHW are designed for students of all ages who have a deep desire to learn, and children are welcome to attend the classes based on their interest level and commitment.
• If your child’s age or interest level require special attention in class, it will be necessary to receive the instructor’s consent in advance before attending the class.

ACCOMODATIONS
Four options are available for DBCCHW attendees with children.
• Children under 10 are allowed to stay in a cabin provided that the cabin is housing folks who are ALL part of one group. It will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian of the child to register ALL of the group at the same time and to have all parties in the group indicate on their registration forms that they are aware of the minor(s) sharing the cabin.
• Children under the age of 10 are not permitted to stay in the dormitories. Children 11 to 17 are allowed in the dormitories if a guardian is housed in the same dorm room.
• A group that contains children may request a small dormitory, which houses 6-8 people.
• Campsite lodging is available for families.

FEES
There are expenses on our part associated with having children in attendance at the DBCCHW. Since some children may attend and fully participate in classes, we must charge for tuition and meals for all children in attendance. We feel the fair way to do this is to adjust the fees on a sliding scale based on the child’s age. Below is our fee schedule as it applies to each child:
